3 DIY Handmade Christmas Gift Ideas

  1. Kids skirt with embroidery
    I upcycled a dress to kids skirt for a friend who has twin girls. Underneath the skirts, I added bloomers and connected the skirt and bloomer at waist. I also made embroidery fish and bird at hem so they can figure out which one is theirs. As I wrote before, I am into hand embroidery now.

  2. Closet Case Files Carolyn Pajamas
    I recently made this pink & ivory version as a friend’s birthday gift. It is fun to make and fairly quick to sew (it takes me about five hours from start to finish) which makes it a good handmade gift. This time I bought piping at Nakamura online shop since I thought it would save me some time. But I wished I made my own piping that fits the seam allowances. In this particular patterns, 1.5cm seam allowances are already included. My store-bought piping width was 0.8cm. It was hard to sew at curves when then seam allowances and piping width don’t match. Overall I am happy with the end result and my friend seemed to have liked it. My Aztec Carolyn here and silk satin here.   3. Teapot Cozy
    I had an opportunity to make teapot cozies for a tea shop in Takasaki this month. I made sure to make a few extra so I can gift them to my friends and family. I made my own pattern based on the instructions from the tea shop owner, but you can find many different versions for free online. The floral print fabric and the beige cotton lining sandwitches the thick quilt batting. Inside, the seams are finished with bias strips. Andy and I exchange gifts on special occasions that has a limit of $20. It started when we first got married. We were 22, and broke (Andy was still a student) but still wanted to make special days special. So we came up with the $20 gift exchange idea and even after 8 years of marriage we stuck with it.

When I tell my friends that I have a $20 limit on anniversary gifts, birthday gifts, valentine’s day gifts etc, they seem perplexed. But there is a lot you can do with $20! I love that it forces you to be a bit more creative. Here are some gifts I’ve given to Andy in the past:
– Three indoor golf lessons (found on Groupon)
– Handmade grappling dummy. These can cost up to 450 bucks.I used an online tutorial and made it out of PVC pipe, pillow and duct tape.
– Some CDs bought on ebay (you can tell that this is a gift from a while ago)
For this Valentine’s day, I gave him a new backpack which I scored with gift certificate, so it was still under the budget. It wasn’t the most creative gift, but it doesn’t have to be every time, right?

japanese hair curler heatless2Andy gave me these heatless curlers! I do heatless curls overnight some nights. I usually wet my hair a bit and taking a piece of rag, I roll my hair with it and sleep with that on my hair. The curls usually last all day and I like that fact that it does not damage my hair. He always made fun of me for having rags all twisted up in my hair at bedtime so he bought me these plastic tube curlers. I haven’t tried them yet but they seem more comfortable than having rags in my hair!
Anyway, I always enjoy our gift exchange tradition. It’s fun. Would you try it with your boyfriend/husband? How do you decide on what to get for gifts and how much to spend? I’d love to read about it!
結婚した当時から、何かのイベント（誕生日、記念日、クリスマスなど）に、２０００円リミットでプレゼントを旦那さんとあげっこするのが恒例になっています。
きっかけは、結婚後すぐは旦那さんが学生だったこともあり、自由になるお金が少なかったからなのですが、もう８年目になると、２０００円だけという課題事態を楽しんでいます。
私は今回は貯めておいたギフトカードを使って新しいリュックをプレゼントしました。

Last Minute Holiday Gift Idea:: Eye Mask

DIY eye mask by vivat veritasDecember always seems to fly by so quick. I can’t believe it is Christmas tomorrow. I want to show you my recent creation, which can be an easy, quick to make Christmas gift. Eye mask! I’ve never worn them growing up, but our new bedroom has smoky glass french doors that let in a lot of street light at night. Andy started using an eye mask and talked me into using one since his sleep has vastly improved after he started using it. I was dubious at first, but I gave it a shot, and it did improve my sleep significantly! I don’t use it as much at night, but when I take a 13 minute cat nap during the day, it helps it a lot. Why 13 minutes? 2 minutes to fall a sleep, 10 minutes of actual sleep and a minute to wake myself up! DIY eye mask by vivat veritas1 back elastic of the eye mask by vivat veritas How to: You will need three different fabrics (or two if you decide to use the same outer fabrics) – I used quilting cotton for the outer, – furry fabric (used here) in the middle (quilt batting works just as well) – silk satin for the inner. You can use the same cotton for this, but silk satin feels fabulous! I used the left over fabric from this dress. Cut three fabrics in 18cm x 10cm rectangles. Using french curve, make the rectangle corners round. Add the elastics in the back. I cut two 0.5cm width elastics in 24cm, and connected them in the middle with 2.5cm width elastic band cut for 18cm. Finish the edge by bias tape. I used the stripes bias tape in contrasting color.
