Mommy’s Diary:: DIY Easy Organza Skirt

The weather in Tokyo has been moody lately. We’ve had some rainy days so Kiko and I worked on an easy craft projects when we could not go to the park to play. It is super easy and all you need is an elastic band and left over fabrics. I had some fabrics left from making this dress, so I cut a little slit along the grain line every three inches so Kiko can rip the fabric to make strings and tie it around the elastic band. The fabric does not have to be organza, any fabrics that are laying around are fine.

Here is how –

What you need:
– Elastic band, cut in the length of your child’s waiste
– Organza, or any fabrics of your choice
– Scissors

How to:
Cut the organza strips in 3 inches width and 2x or what the skirt length should be. Have your child tie the stripes to the elastics. Repeat the same about 20 times, and you’ve made the cute organza skirt!

最近お天気が悪くて子供と外で遊べない日があったので、簡単なクラフトを一緒にしました。
ゴムを子供のウエストの長さに切って結び、スカート丈の２倍の長さの布を何枚も切って、ゴムに結び付けていきます。
結びつけるところは子供にやってもらって、２０枚ぐらい結べたらスカートの出来上がり！

プリンセスみたいって喜んでいました♪

Black & White

Hi! What have you been working on lately sewing wise? I just finished my first batch of orders for Anthom, which is an online shop based in the Washington D.C. area. I am so thrilled to be included in the Anthom launch which is coming up in April. The co-owner Ashley is wonderful to work with and I love her style (and she is pretty). Not only that, Anthom will be carrying great designers, one of which is Samantha Pleet. I have been following Samantha Pleet for a while as you can see in my inspiration post here. (back in 2009.. feels such a long time ago!). She is from Philadelphia, and now is in Brooklyn, I’ve really enjoyed seeing her grow and expand since I found her clothing back in 2009. Now she collaborates with Urban Outfitters and her clothes are stocked in Anthoropologie and Saks Fifth! It is inspiring to see a designer bloom and I would love to follow her path some day…

Anyway, these black and white striped skirts will be in stock in Anthom, and they are exclusive items only available there. I like how the side of the skirts look like chevron stripes.

Mommy’s Diary: DIY Little Girl’s Skirt

I love, how little fabric, it takes to make small kids’ clothes. With less than half a yard, you can make an adorable little skirt! I sew clothes for adults for Vivat Veritas, but sometimes I like to take a break and sew for Kiko. It takes much less time , and gives me some instant gratification.

I had an wool plaid wrap skirt that I was going to take to a thrift store, but decided to try and reuse it. The construction of the original skirt was very simple so it made it very easy to deconstruct and remake. I wrote up a little diagram below to show how to make this simple square elastic waist skirt.

You will need to measure your child’s hip and waist measurements. Cut two square fabric sections with the width of half of your child’s hip multiplied by 1.5. The length can be however you want the skirt to be plus 2″ for seam allowances (1″ on top and 1″ on bottom). Then sew the side seams, and hem the skirt. For top, fold once and sew to make a loop to insert an elastic band. Make sure to leave 1-2″ space so you can insert the elastic. After inserting the elastic (the length of the elastic should be your child’s waist measurement), sew the space you left.
