DIY:: T-shirt to a Dress Tutorial

I got this idea of turning a T-shirt that is too small for a child into a dress on Pinterest. I thought I pinned it on my DIY ideas board, but now I can’t seem to find it! Anyway, this DIY is super easy. It helps both parents and a child, if your child is like mine, who LOVES wearing dresses and insists on wearing one every day. The idea is to take a small T-shirt (or it does not have to be small, but you can recycle the small one to make it last longer!) and attach a rectangle shaped, gather skirt. The fabric for the skirt part can be anything. The one I saw on Pinterest uses cotton fabric. It seemed like it was a quilting cotton. I used jersey, which I intended to use for my Spring jacket/cardigan but never got around making it. I think tulle or lace might work well as well.

I cut the jersey in one big rectangle shape. After that, hem the skirt hem, and attach the elastic band all around the top hem. Attach the elastic part into the T-shirt to make it into a dress! Last Minute Holiday Gift Idea:: Eye Mask

I want to show you my recent creation, which can be an easy, quick to make Christmas gift. Eye mask! I’ve never worn them growing up, but our new bedroom has smoky glass french doors that let in a lot of street light at night. Andy started using an eye mask and talked me into using one since his sleep has vastly improved after he started using it. I was dubious at first, but I gave it a shot, and it did improve my sleep significantly! I don’t use it as much at night, but when I take a 13 minute cat nap during the day, it helps it a lot. Why 13 minutes? 2 minutes to fall a sleep, 10 minutes of actual sleep and a minute to wake myself up! DIY eye mask by vivat veritas1 back elastic of the eye mask by vivat veritas How to: You will need three different fabrics (or two if you decide to use the same outer fabrics) – I used quilting cotton for the outer, – furry fabric (used here) in the middle (quilt batting works just as well) – silk satin for the inner. You can use the same cotton for this, but silk satin feels fabulous! I used the left over fabric from this dress. Cut three fabrics in 18cm x 10cm rectangles. Using french curve, make the rectangle corners round. Add the elastics in the back. I cut two 0.5cm width elastics in 24cm, and connected them in the middle with 2.5cm width elastic band cut for 18cm. Finish the edge by bias tape. I used the stripes bias tape in contrasting color. Holiday Gift Idea:: Easy Fabric Wall Art

Can you believe it is already December? The latter half of the year 2013 is literally flying by! I’m sure many of you are prepping for holiday gifts, so I want to introduce easy holiday gift ideas every week this month.

The first up is this easy wall decoration. Since Andy and I moved to a bigger place this fall, so we have more walls and rooms to decorate (on budget). I love this easy DIY, where you can use scraps of unique fabric!

All you need is cardboard (I used a box from Amazon), paper cutter, cutting mat, duct tape, fabric of your choice and stapler. Once you have everything, decide on the size of the decoration. Mine is quite small, perhaps 6 inches each corner. The great thing about this little DIY is that you can make a giant wall art but it won’t be heavy, since it is just the weight of the cardboard and fabric. As a renter, I’m always a bit conscious of hanging stuff on the wall so as not to be fined by the home owner when I move out.

I cut the cardboard in the size I want, and drew lines from 2cm (1 inch) from the edges.

Then, you follow the lines you drew above with a paper cutter, but not enough to completely separate the pieces. This is to make the the cardboard easier to bend. Cut out the four corners of the cardboard.

Using duct tape, secure the corners. After that, cover the cardboard piece with fabric of your choice with a stapler! I used a stretchy fabric, which made it really easy to stretch on the cardboard piece. easy fabric wall art step3easy fabric wall art
