Random Things I Made | September 2015

October 10, 2015 By Chie

What I Made September 2015 Vivat Veritas Blog

Here is a round-up of random stuff I made in the month of September. My August version is here. I was away for the first two weeks of September, so by the time I came back to Japan, I missed sewing. As soon as I came back, I got back to sewing every night. Looking back, I think I made a fair amount of stuff considering I was gone for half the month. Next month, I want to start sewing more for myself – I’m thinking bootcut flannel pants, finishing up the Merckwaerdigh bra in sea foam, and start on Deer and Doe Pavot Jacket (thank you Inna for the pattern!).

    1. Cotton lace casual wedding dress in light blue. A customer from Etsy wanted this dress in light blue for her October wedding, so I found this pretty cotton lace from a shop in Kyoto. It’s light-weight and makes it unique and unconventional for her special day.
Pretty Flower Motif Cotton LaceI sent the dress with my shop card and thank you card I got from Japanese fashion illustrator, Junichi Nakahara‘s shop in Hiroo. Love his illustrations!
Vivat Veritas Blue Cotton Lace Wedding Dress2. Blousons, skirt and dress. This was interesting to sew as the patterns were shaped in a way that I would never thought to draft them. The bottom part of the skirt can be separated with a zipper in the middle, and there are shorts underneath.
Big Zipper Skirt Hoodie dressBlouson with mesh lining. The mesh lining gives it a sporty feel and the pocket on the right side has a unique triangular shape.
Mesh Blouson Unique pocket on bomber jacketAnother blouson in quilted fabric. The seams are finished with bias strips.Quilting Jacket
      3. Stretch lace off-the-shoulder top, something similar to the one I made last month.
stretch lace cropped top 4. Satin bridal gown. I want one for myself! Bridal Satin RobeBridal Satin Robe Sleeves5. I refashioned an old maxi dress that didn’t fit me in the bust are to maxi skirt. The fabric is cotton lawn and light weight, so it fit well in my suitcase for the trip. I simply cut the top part off and added elastic. Also added a slit on the side.Maxi skirt remake Maxi dress to skirt DIYBefore After Maxi Dress to Maxi Skirt6. Lastly, another Watson! This is my second favorite Watson after my black one (I also made it in dot print and another racer back variations). The wide bra band makes it very comfortable to wear and the color white matches almost anything in my wardrobe. Watson Bra Racer Back Variation via vivatveritasWhat have you sewn lately?

Watson Bra in Black and White Dots

July 16, 2015 By Chie

Dot Print Watson Bra A32 via Vivat Veritas Blog

Soon after I made my first Watson Bra by Cloth Habit, I found left over fabric in my closet that had been used to make this dress (now on sale for $20!) back in 2013. I still had a meter or so left. It has stretch, and there are apples hiding among the black dots. Since I already had the notions and power net in black I decided to make another bra.

As before, I added bra pads and lined the cups with power netting. for my previous attempt, I enclosed the pads completely. However, this time I left a small opening so I would be able to take the pads in and out. After a number of washes, the pads can get old. This way I can replace them easily.

My second try went much quicker. I really had fun making it. I usually listen to podcasts while I sew, and my current sewing/crafting podcast favorite is Elise Gets Crafty.

Pattern: Watson bra pattern from Cloth Habit
Size: 32A
Fabric: Stretch poly mix fabric from Nippori Tomato
Notions: Flora’s Garden on etsy
Modifications: Added bra pad and lined the bra cups with power net.How I added a bra pad on Watson Bra (Click through for more)

So what’s next? I’m continuing to collect inspirational images for bra here. Lacey back, burgandy lace for fall, white racerback… Variations are endless. I’ll soon be back to stretch knit section in Nippori.

Watson Bra in Black Scallop Lace

July 10, 2015 By Chie

Watson Bra Black by Cloth Habit (via vivatveritas.com)

I made my first bra! I’m so excited. What’s more, it fits well. No pattern modification to patterns were made. I’m impressed how well this pattern is drafted.

Bras never fit me. I kind of gave up on the whole bra thing. I hate under wire bra’s, because they  cut into my shoulders and are uncomfortable. So for a while I was into un nana cool’s non wire bra like this one, but even that, I have the problem of the under bust elastic pulling up as the day goes by so I stopped wearing them. This Watson longline bra though, perhaps because of the longline-ness, it fits just right around my under bust and they are very comfortable. I’m raving about this pattern, but rest assured this is not a sponsored post. Watson Bra Black Scallop Lace by Vivat Veritas BlogIn Process of Making Watson Bra3

The sew-along at Cloth Habit blog was very helpful. As the instructions stated, I adjusted the upper cup pattern for my scallop lace. I bought my lace at Nippori Tomato for 100 yen per meter. 1 meter was just enough to make a bra in size 32A. All the other notions including the slides, stretch mesh, hook and eye, plush strap elastic were purchased at Flora’s Garden on etsy.

One change I made was to line the cups and added a foam bra cup. They were from my old un nana cool bra. I’m not into sheer bra cups. They need to be the opposite of sheer, in order to function as a bra for a daily use in my opinion. Actually, growing up in Japan, I had never encountered a sheer bra until I went to the U.S. When I first saw the soft bras without any padding at cups, I wondered how in the world you wear it without showing your nipples? That’s still amazes me to this day. In Process of Making Watson Bra2 Cloth Habit Watson Bra in Black Lace DSC_1705 Handmade Watson Bra in Black Lace Watson Bra and Archer Shirt (via vivatveritas.com)

Wearing it with my polkadot Archer shirt (pattern by Grainline Studio). The bra can function as a bralet, so showing it a bit underneath is a shirt is ok. It was such a fun quick sew! I’m going to make one in white with a modification of racerback next. Can’t wait. Watson Bra Black by Cloth Habit (click through for more)

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨

For those cool mornings and evenings,
a silk haori is just right.
