ASOS Market Place Guest Post

July 30, 2012 By Chie

I have a guest blogger here today. This article was written by Sarah Oxley on behalf of ASOS Marketplace. Sarah is a fashion and vintage lover, who’s always on the lookout for the next vintage trend. Here is Sarah: ❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤***❤

The Vintage Fashion Hotspot The fashion business is a tricky business, and it’s hard to get noticed in this fast paced industry. What’s in one day is out the other, or so they say. This is changing, because many styles are just too good to be completely abandoned. Vintage is making a big comeback in the fashion world, because people simply love 40s, 50s, 60s, 70, 80s (yes, even 80s) and 90s vintage dresses. The nostalgic charm of these styles inspire many new and upcoming designers to put their own personal twist on these vintage eras, and there’s one place where you can take a look at the latest vintage inspired fashion. ASOS Marketplace offers a platform for designers to share their latest creation in the form of a boutique, and to sell their creations through the Marketplace. For vintage lovers, this is a great place to shop, as there’s constantly new collections and boutiques joining the Marketplace. Popularity of designers can grow very quickly through ‘The People’s Runway’, a blog featuring some of the most popular photos and fashion pieces. To give you an idea of what you can see on the Marketplace, here are some examples of my personal boutique favourites:

E-Vintage E-Vintage has a wide range of vintage clothes for both women and men. They also provide lots of very colourful and different accessories, such as this bright and bold handbag, as well as the nifty purple belt, which really draws people’s eyes. The Navajo shirt is a design that used to feature in all sorts of clothing and items, so it’s nice to see it making a comeback. Bird On A Wire I very much like the versatility of Bird On A Wire. They commit to several different eras, but are nevertheless devoted to each one. Above are some items from their 60s inspired range, while below shows some of their 90s designs.

The Whitepepper The Whitepepper has a wide variety of designs and clothes for men and women, and although vintage is at their core, they manage to add a twist to everything thereby creating a brand new look. These are just some examples of the boutiques you can find on ASOS Marketplace. To find out how your vintage fashion can be featured visit the website here.

Interview: Elizabeth of Oia Jules

July 19, 2012 By Chie

I first came across with Elizabeth’s jewelry shop on etsy, Oia Jules through Hapa Time blog. I’ve collaborated with Jessica of Hapa Time and am a regular visitor of her blog. When I saw her wear this gold chunky chain bracelet with a natural stone, I had to click the link to see more.. After spending a few minutes on the site, I ended up buying this bracelet which I have worn almost daily since its arrival! Elizabeth and I chatted via etsy convo and she was kind enough to answer my questions about owning a small business. I hope you’ll enjoy the interview:)

Image via Oia Jule Facebook Page

1. Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I started my career as a graphic designer in New York CIty after attending art school at Pratt Institute. After a few years I moved out west to Los Angeles and continued my career as an Art Director working in the music, fashion and entertainment industries. I decided a year ago that I wanted to pursue my passion, creating my own jewelry line, as a full time profession.
I’m a super huge music enthusiast, lover of all things creative and tiny bunnies.
Also, I’m a mommy to the cutest, funniest 6 year old boy in the universe ; )

2. What’s the story behind Oia Jules? How did you get started?

I actually started the business with a friend from art school 2 years ago. She had just got back from a vacation in Greece and was inspired by some of the street vendors making necklaces there. Oia is in Santorini, which is where the name comes from. We started off making necklaces and selling them at craft fairs. Eventually the designs became more sophisticated and I opened the Etsy shop.

3. What is your typical work day in your shop?

Right now my shop is my home office. I usually get up, check emails, make a to-do list for the day. After breakfast with my son, I get start by fulfilling orders. I work while he is in school and then take a break when I pick him up. I usually start up again after dinner and continue working into the night.

4. Is this your full-time profession? If not, do you plan on becoming a full-time in the future? What steps do you plan on becoming a full-time?

Yes, I have been fortunate enough to turn this into my full time job. I love the schedule flexibility it offers.

5. What’s the best part and worst part about running a small business?

The best part is, well really the 2 best parts–schedule flexibilty and hearing feedback from a satisfied customer. It makes me incredibly happy to see pictures of customers wearing their pieces and seeing how they style them. It’s very rewarding to hear that someone loves something you’ve created.

The worst part is when an order gets lost in the mail!

6. What is your advice to a small business owners in a creative field?

Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t succeed. Take risks and pursue your passion.

7. What’s next? Any exciting plans coming up?

Right now I have teamed up with the new site called Style/Stalk. Its a sale site where fashion/style influencers pick their favorite brands to work with and offer pieces at special prices. I was lucky enough to be picked by Alicia, of Cheetah is the New Black blog. I love working with fashion bloggers! I’m also starting to branch out into retail. I’ve got about 5 retail stores around the US that carry Oia Jules and I am hoping to increase that number this year!

Guest Post: The Best Vintage Sewing Patterns: Free PDF Downloads

July 2, 2012 By Chie

Today, I have Lisa Arbury guest posting. Lisa  is a freelance fashion writer from London. When she approached me with a guest post idea for Vivat Veritas blog, I asked her if she could write something about free vintage sewing patterns and she came up with a great post with resources. I hope you enjoy! Here is Lisa:

The Best Vintage Sewing Patterns: Free PDF Downloads

Many people now are turning to handicrafts and making their own clothes in an attempt to not only save money but to relearn skills that their Grandmothers and Mothers had in their own childhoods but have been sadly forgotten.

Not only that, but with strong interest in vintage glamour and fashion, brought on in part by the success of films such as “The Artist” last year and the forthcoming excitement of the remake of “The Great Gatsby” more and more of us want to make ourselves something that is just “that little bit different” and unlike anything that can be found in department stores and boutiques.

There are a wealth of sewing sites out there, but many charge a fortune for patterns or even to join. Here is a simple list of a few of the best sites out there and what you can expect from them, with accompanying pictures so you can see the types of pattern available. What are you waiting for! Needle and cotton at the ready and happy sewing!

Sewing.org

Sewing.org has some lovely PDFs, all you need to do is log onto the main site and then on the left hand side click on the “Fashion Sewing” link. You will have to search a little to find the PDF files, the patterns available are all marked with a little “PDF” sign. However, there are lots downloadable files for patterns to make vintage inspired shirts, skirts, jackets, shawls, pyjamas and accessories such as these:

❤ Simplicity Paris Pajamas
❤ Embroidered Boots tutorial
❤ Bordered Jacket tutorial
❤ No Pattern Sundress, Skirt and Beach Bag tutorial

BurdaStyle.com

Burdastyle is a great, very professional looking site and offers free downloads, including a “Pattern Of The Day” which, as you would expect changes every single day. Here are some other examples of lovely vintage clothes which are free PDFs available right now. At the present moment there are around two hundred and seventy four patterns there all waiting to be downloaded and made, and some of the patterns are free!

❤ Circle skit and jacket
❤ Sleeveless flared top

Vavavoomvintage

This is a cute blog run by Brittany Sherman, a mom of two and a vintage lover. While there aren’t any PDFs for download, her fashion is all vintage inspired and comes with extensive instructions that you can print and plenty of pictures. It covers a variety of eras and styles and there truly is something for everyone, from novice to experienced sewers alike. Well worth a visit. It’s a nice, fun, relaxing site too. Very well set out and has obviously been created by someone who has a lot of love for her subject. It’s the perfect site for a leisurely browse on the laptop while you recline on your sectional sofas and decide what you’re going to make next.

Modern Sewing Patterns

This site looks a little plain by comparison to the others, there is a lack of photographs (though there are some good illustrations) which is rather a shame as there are some great PDFs for download including coats and vintage dresses, such as these:

❤ Shorts with patch pockets
❤ Blouse with chiffon sleeves
❤ Sundress with shaped relieve

Hopefully this will give you in the inspiration you need to start planning and making all your own wonderful vintage clothes!

Lisa Arbury is a freelance fashion writer from London. As a bit of a retro-chick herself she’s very excited to see the comeback of traditional styles and fashions.

Last Saturday, I got to share that with someone very special.

@designerhelen is a designer from New York who first reached out to me through my little sewing lesson account. When we started talking, I realized we were asking the exact same question: how do you take something with a past, and carry it forward?

We met in person here in Tokyo last December. That conversation became Released. Reimagined.
Two designers. Two cities. One shared belief — that beautiful things deserve a second life.

None of this would have been possible without our incredible team:

Released. Reimagined.

It took quite a bit of wandering to find this venue. Tucked just off a quiet side street from Harajuku’s Takeshita Exit — full glass frontage, light pouring in. The moment I stepped inside, I knew🌱

Right at the entrance, @brownie_shots will be running a pop-up☕︎ The central space becomes our runway. VIP seating going in now.

Less than one week to go. Fingers crossed for sunshine ☀️

この季節のそのギャップが、なんか好き♡

深みのある金茶とテラコッタ。
春の光に当てると、
秋色が美しく見える気がします✨

朝晩の肌寒さには、シルクの羽織りがちょうどいい。

It’s May — and yet, fall hues🍂

Warm enough to break a sweat by noon,
then a cool breeze sneaks in by evening🌬️

I kind of love that about this time of year♡

Rich amber and terracotta.
Something about spring light makes these autumn tones look even more beautiful✨

For those cool mornings and evenings,
a silk haori is just right.
